Best American Standard Toilet review

Innovative Technology by American Standard

✓ VorMax Flush

The VorMax flush technology has got to be one of the signature toilet technologies on the market. American Standard has truly flipped the toilet industry on its head with this innovation – literally!

vormax tchnology, blue swirl flush action of toilet bowl

In every toilet, the water used for flushing is divided into two resources – the siphon and the rinse. The siphon, or jetway, water is the water sitting at the bottom of the bowl that pulls waste down and away. In normal toilets, this accounts for about 70% of the flush’s water.

The rinse water swirls down from the rim, pushing any waste that may be clinging to the bowl down, usually making up the other 30% of the flush’s volume.

However, American Standard engineers realized that the part of the flush that is most effective is not the pull of the jetway, but rather the pushing mechanism of water flooding down from the rim. So, they took that 70/30 ratio, and flipped it!

In a VorMax toilet, the jetway only uses 30% of the flush volume, and a whopping 70% of water goes towards the rinse action. Devoting more water to rinsing the bowl, American Standard has created a flush system that essentially scrubs the bowl for you, removing waste in no time.

✓ EverClean Finish

One huge advantage of choosing an American Standard toilet is its patented EverClean finish. This is an additive that is baked directly into the porcelain or ceramic material of your toilet, which produces a final product with a smooth, mirror-like shine.

Besides being pretty to look at, the EverClean finish lives up to its name by preventing the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria on surfaces. This glaze also fights against stains and odors caused by bacteria build-ups.

You’ll find EverClean on the surface of toilet bowls, tanks, seats, and even in the trapway piping, as well as on the surfaces of American Standard’s bathtubs and whirlpools.

✓ ActiClean Self-Cleaning

One way American Standard keeps their toilets cleaner than the rest is ActiClean. This technology allows you to press a button which releases a cleaning solution that cleans your bowl.

You have two cleaning choices which is either a deep clean or quick clean. The deep clean will release the solution for 10 minutes and the quick clean for 1 minute. This will saturate the bowl for that duration of time.

The cleaning cartridge holds the solution and fits into the top of your tank. According to American Standard, each full cartridge typically last for 9 weeks. If you are looking to purchase a new one, the model number is 1466.001. They also come is 3 packs too.

ActiClean featured toilets usually come with American Standard’s signature CleanCurved trademarked rim. This is a seamless rim without crevices allowing for easier cleaning and no places for dirt and debris to get stuck.

✓ ActiVate Touchless Flush

ActiVate is American Standard’s proprietary no-touch flush system. This technology provides a safe way to flush the toilet while avoiding contact with one of the places with the most germs.

American Standard touchless flush with hand over sensor

In place of a normal flush lever, ActiVate equipped toilets have a small sensor. A simple wave of the hand over this sensor, from a distance of about two inches away, is all it takes to flush away your waste.

The system is battery-powered and has been shown to last up to two years, based on an average flush rate of 12 flushes per day. And if you’re worried about technological failures, don’t be…a manual flush button is located on the sensor itself if you ever need a backup.

The sensor can also be disabled so you’ll be able to clean your toilet without accidentally flushing it 10 times.

The ActiVate touchless flush can be found on a number of American Standard models, including the Devonport, Clean, and Studio.

Flushing Power

With the Champion flushing system, American Standard has done the impossible: created a no-plunge, clog-free toilet.

This toilet features the industry’s largest trapway, utilizing a 4-inch piston action accelerator flush valve to  eliminate 70% more mass  than standard toilets in the blink of an eye. American Standard demonstrated this power in an astonishing video in which they did a flush test with golf balls.

This high-efficiency toilet uses only 1.6 gallons per flush, making it environmentally friendly as well.

Design

Having reviewed hundreds of toilets, we found that the Champion 4 is one of the most comfortable to use. The elongated shape of the bowl allows for extra hip support, and the height of the seat, at 15.75″, makes sitting comfortable for all users.

The Champion 4 has been engineered with an EverClean surface, which inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew and reduces odor. The toilet’s one-piece design and EverClean surface make cleaning a breeze.

The Champion 4 comes with necessary items for a hassle-free installation, including a trip lever, toilet seat with cover, speed connect, coupling kit, and bolt caps. Wax rings usually have to be purchased separately.

The toilet is available in three different finishes, white, linen, or bone, with the option for two different heights. It even has a slow-close lid to prevent slamming. The Champion 4 also comes with a limited 10-year warranty.

If you’re looking for an American Standard model with the most flushing efficiency, the H2Option is the unit for you.

Dual-Flushing Power

The H2Option utilizes PowerWash Rim Technology to create excellent water pressure in the rim chamber. The intelligent use of Siphonic Action Technology generates immense siphoning power that entirely removes any residue from the bowl.

The toilet has a dual-flush system that is maneuvered by a chrome-plated top-mounted push-button actuator that, in the partial-flush mode, eradicates full liquid waste and a small amount of solid waste using 0.92 gallons of water per flush.

  • 1,000 MaP score and 1.6 gallons per flush
  • PowerWash keeps bowl nice and clean
  • EverClean surface coating prevents stains
  • Can be difficult to install

With an elongated bowl and comfort-height technology, the Cadet PRO toilet was designed with a comfortable user experience in mind.

Flushing Power

The Cadet flushing system has strong suction power, utilizing 1.6 gallons per flush. Its robust metal trip lever and metal shank fill the valve, making it ready for the next flush in just a few seconds.

Combined with PowerWash, this toilet delivers raw power while maintaining low water usage. The toilet  uses 20% less water than standard toilets , saving you money with each press of the lever while delivering high-quality performance. The toilet has a flushing score of 1,000 MaP

Design

The Cadet PRO is EPA WaterSense certified as well as ADA compliant. With its EverClean finish, the shiny and tough elongated bowl surface will always be clean and protected from the growth of bacteria and mold.

The Cadet PRO is made of long-lasting vitreous china. It is available in white, bone and linen, and does not come with a seat. The toilet does come with color-matching bowl cups that are easy to install and will make decorating your bathroom a cinch.

Cadet PRO Compared to the TOTO Drake II

The Cadet PRO comes with all of the special American Standard features we mentioned above.

On the other hand, the TOTO Drake II comes with TOTO’s Tornado Flush technology, also known as the Dual Cyclone. This system is similar to the American Standard PowerWash method, in that it provides a powerful and water-efficient flush. The Drake II features a CeFiONtect coating that keeps the bowl as clean as possible and reduces maintenance, similar to the EverClean finish.

So, which unit is the best toilet out of these two models? Well, it’s almost too close to call, but we believe the American Standard CadetPRO  is the real winner.

Both toilets are excellent contenders, but the Cadet PRO is slightly quieter than the Drake II. That, combined with a less blocky design that makes it more visually appealing, just barely gives American Standard the edge in this battle.

The Cadet 3 is an easy to install one-piece toilet known for its reliable flushing power and comfortable height.

Flushing Power

There’s nothing worse than skid marks on your toilet bowl. Standard toilets aren’t powerful enough to deliver the flushing speed required to rinse tough stains in one flush. But this toilet does the trick.

The Cadet 3’s one-of-a-kind flushing system consists of a chemical and distort-resistant 3-inch flush valve for accelerated water volume flow per flush. It’s  almost 80% faster than regular 2-inch valves . The fully glazed 2 1/8-inch trapway prevents clogs and evacuates 1000 grams of solid waste with every flush.

Even with its powerful flush, this toilet uses 20% less water than standard toilets and is EPA WaterSense certified.

Design

This toilet is ADA-compliant, which is indicative of the optimum level of comfort it provides to its users. With a seat height of 17.25”, people of every age will benefit from the maximum knee support it provides.

The toilet bowl surface is composed of a quality vitreous china for a long lifespan and is glazed with silver-ion additives to create an antibacterial EverClean surface that guards against stain growth and mildew.

The toilet is available in three finishes, white, linen, or bone, and also has the option for the lever to be on either the right or left side of the toilet. History of the American Standard Company

American Standard started as the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company (SSMC), back in 1895. As one of the first plumbing and fixture manufacturers in the United States, SSMC quickly grew to become a highly influential company.

They were at the forefront of advances to modern plumbing such as widespread indoor plumbing, the creation of the one-piece toilet, and combination faucets.

In 1967, the company changed its name to American Standard, and then in 2008 American Standard merged with fellow companies Crane Plumbing and Eljer to form the American Standard Brands we know today.

American Standard manufacturers not only toilets, but everything needed for a complete home bathroom, and even some kitchen appliances. This includes showers, tubs, sinks, faucets, soap dispensers, towel bars, toilet paper holders, and of course toilets and toilet seats.

The company’s general design leans towards clean lines, minimal frills, and classic colors. Within those guidelines, they’ve still produced products that fall into one of four distinct design categories; traditional, transitional, modern, and innovative.

Collections range from the classically elegant Delancey, which uses traditional materials and subtle ornamentation to inspire a feeling of old-money class, to the ultra-modern Times Square collection featuring sleek lines and blocky, geometric angles.

Features of American Standard Toilets

Customizing your home requires taking into consideration lots of details. Toilets are no exception.

Let’s break down the details you need to consider when searching for the perfect fit.

✓ WaterSense Technology

You may have noticed the EPA WaterSense certification on some American Standard toilet models. But what does it mean?

This certification signifies that the Environmental Protection Agency has recognized that particular toilet as a high-efficiency toilet; these toilets tend to use 20% less water, without compromising performance.

Water efficiency can create significant savings on your water bills while making a positive environmental impact. That’s great news, considering that your toilet is responsible for the majority of water use in the home!

✓ ADA Compliance

ADA compliant toiletAmerican Standard has made a concentrated effort to design products that meet or exceed the standards recommended by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This includes Right Height toilets that are more accessible to people in wheelchairs, walk-in bathtubs, and showers with textured bases for better grip.

Almost every design collection offers ADA-compliant options. These features are not only necessary for people with disabilities or limited mobility, but many also add convenience or comfort to abled people as well.

Their website also includes a comprehensive article on how to better incorporate ADA-compliant design in your bathroom.

✓ Eco-friendly & Economical

With the current change in our climate, it is vital to invest in a toilet that is eco-friendly and doesn’t harm the environment. Eco-friendly toilets consume less water while flushing, helping you reduce your water bills and save thousands of gallons of water every year.

Replacing the old flushing toilet in your house with a new-age model can save you as much as 25% of a home’s daily water usage. According to a law passed in 1995, a toilet can’t use more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush. If your toilet requires multiple flushes to wipe out all traces of waste, it’s time to switch to a new one.

✓ Toilet Seat Details

Toilet seats usually don’t come with the toilet, leaving you with the hassle of purchasing one separately. So, before making a purchase, make sure that you read the list of a toilet’s features to determine if it comes with everything you’re looking for, including a seat. Toilet seats come with various features, such as soft-close features, heating features, etc. You can choose the seat that meets your preferences to improve your bathroom experience.

✓ Flush Mechanism

Like most toilets, all American Standard toilets come with a flush valve. Single or dual flush is something to consider. A dual flush toilet lets you choose the water usage: either 1.28 or 1.6 gallons per flush. In both cases, power is the same, and efficiency is maintained. Both are eco-friendly.

✓  Design Style

Designing the inside of your bathroom is something that most homeowners take part in, from customizing the tiles to the paint. But what many forget is the design of the toilet. American Standard toilets come in many different sizes, finishes, and heights, all in different price ranges. They can even come wall- or floor-mounted, whichever you prefer.

✓ Water Consumption

As law mandates, all manufactured toilets in the U.S. cannot use more than 1.6 gallons per flush, which led manufacturers to create new technology in toilets that will maintain the same power while using less water. An EverClean surface will help clean everything that comes it’s way, reducing the number of flushes needed.

✓ Dimensions (Will it Fit?)

They are 27 to 30 inches deep, 21 to 31 inches high, and about 20 inches wide. In most cases, traditional toilet seats are 15 1/2 inches from the ground, which, for decades, had been considered the most comfortable height.

✓ Installation Steps

Compared to traditional units, they offer a much simpler and faster installation. For example, consider the drain assembly and adjustment. Often this is one of the trickiest parts of installing a new toilet. Traditional toilet drains have around 15 parts to assemble, whereas American Standard drains have only 2. As well the seal on their drains are very tight, and the lift rods come pre-adjusted at the correct height.

Our Ending Thoughts

American Standard is a high-quality, efficient brand, based right here in the United States. We love how they manage to combine classic functionality with inventive design and innovation. Everything that American Standard produces, from their most basic toilet model to the most high-tech, is made with beautiful materials and thoughtful craftsmanship.
