American Standard Technology

American Standard incorporates several proprietary features into its toilet collections. To help you understand what sets it apart from competitors, we researched the brand’s exclusive technology and outlined it in this section.

✓ VorMax Flush

Diagram of a toilet showing the VorMax Flush system with water flow and tank mechanisms labeled by Toiletable.

Without a doubt, VorMax flush technology is one of the signature toilet innovations on the market. American Standard has truly flushed away the competition with this game-changing design!

In every toilet, the water used for flushing serves two primary functions: the siphon and the rinse. The siphon, also known as the jetway, refers to water at the bottom of the bowl that creates a suction to pull waste down and out of the toilet. In most toilets, the siphon accounts for about 70% of the total water used in a flush.

On the other hand, the rinse water swirls down from the rim, washing away any waste clinging to the bowl. This process usually accounts for the other 30% of the flush’s total volume.

However, American Standard engineers made a groundbreaking discovery: they noticed that, compared with the pull of the jetway, the motion of the water flooding down from the rim is actually the more effective part of the flush. So, they took the typical 70/30 ratio and flipped it!

In a VorMax toilet, the jetway uses only 30% of the flush volume, while a whopping 70% of water goes toward the rinse action. By devoting more water to rinsing the bowl, American Standard created a flush system that simplifies waste removal and cleanup. It essentially scrubs the bowl for you! Who doesn’t want to spend less time cleaning the toilet?

✓ EverClean Finish

One huge advantage of choosing an American Standard model is the brand’s patented EverClean surface, a glaze additive baked directly onto the toilet’s porcelain or ceramic material. EverClean produces a final product with a smooth, mirror-like shine.

EverClean may be pretty to look at, but that’s not all—it lives up to its name by preventing mold, mildew, and bacteria from growing on the toilet surface. This glaze also deters stains and odors caused by the buildup of bacteria.

You’ll find EverClean in American Standard’s toilet bowls, tanks, seats, and trapway pipes—it’s even incorporated into their bathtubs and whirlpools!

✓ ActiClean Self-Cleaning

White toilet with an open lid showing a self-cleaning mechanism labeled "ActiClean Self-Cleaning" and a cleaner cartridge image.

Imagine a toilet that cleans itself with the push of a button. It’s not science fiction—it’s ActiClean, American Standard’s secret to an effortlessly clean toilet! This technology allows you to press a button to release an integrated cleaning solution that cleanses your bowl.

The cartridge that holds the cleaning solution fits neatly into the top of ActiClean toilet tanks. According to American Standard, each cartridge lasts up to 9 weeks. Replacement cartridges can be purchased from many online retailers in single or 3-packs.

ActiClean comes with two cleaning options: Deep Clean and Quick Clean. Deep Clean thoroughly scrubs and cleans the bowl for 10 minutes, while Quick Clean’s 1-minute scrub is perfect for regular upkeep.

ActiClean toilets also feature American Standard’s signature CleanCurve Rim, which provides a seamless surface free from crevices. This prevents dirt and debris from getting stuck, allowing for easier cleaning.

✓ ActiVate Touchless Flush

White toilet with ActiVate Touchless Flush feature and its mechanism shown separately. "Toiletable" logo at the bottom.

ActiVate is American Standard’s proprietary no-touch flush system. This technology provides a safer flush, allowing the user to avoid contact with one of the germiest places in the bathroom.

In place of a normal flush lever, ActiVate equipped toilets come with a small flush sensor. All it takes to flush away waste is a simple wave of the hand over this sensor from about two inches away.

The ActiVate system is battery-powered and has a battery life of up to two years, based on an average rate of 12 flushes per day. And if you’re worried about technological failures, don’t be—a manual flush button is located on the sensor itself if you ever need a backup. The sensor can also be disabled, so it’s easy to clean your toilet without accidentally flushing it 10 times.

The ActiVate touchless flush can be found on a number of American Standard models, including the Devonport, Clean, and Studio.

“The two-piece Cadet PRO elongated toilet is the perfect combination of price, performance, and value.”

With an elongated bowl and chair-height technology, the Cadet PRO toilet was designed with a comfortable user experience in mind.

Infographic of a white toilet with features: Comfort Height, PowerWash, EverClean, 1.28 gallons, 82 pounds, left handle.

Flushing Ability

The Cadet flushing system has strong suction power, utilizing 1.6 gallons per flush. Its robust metal trip lever and metal shank fill the valve, preparing it for the next flush in just seconds.

  • Gravity-fed flush
  • PowerWash Rim
  • WaterSense certified

Combined with PowerWash, this toilet delivers raw flushing power while maintaining low water usage. This model uses 20% less water than standard toilets, saving you money with each flush while delivering high-quality performance. The Cadet PRO boasts an outstanding MAP score of 1,000.

Design & Style

The Cadet PRO is EPA WaterSense certified as well as ADA compliant. With its EverClean finish, the shiny and durable elongated bowl surface remains clean and protected from the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

  • Classical design
  • 17-inch seat height
  • Exposed trapway
  • Color options: white, bone, and linen

The Cadet PRO is made of long-lasting vitreous china available in white, bone, and linen. Though the seat must be purchased separately, the toilet does come with color-matching bowl cups that are easy to install—making decorating your bathroom a cinch.

Cadet PRO vs TOTO Drake II

The Cadet PRO comes with all of the signature American Standard features we mentioned above. On the other hand, the TOTO Drake II features TOTO’s Tornado Flush technology, also known as the Dual Cyclone. This system is similar to American Standard’s PowerWash in that it provides a powerful and water-efficient flush. The Drake II comes with a CEFIONTECT coating that keeps the bowl spotless and reduces maintenance, similar to the EverClean finish.

So, which of these two models is the best? Well, it’s almost too close to call—but we believe the American Standard Cadet PRO is the real winner.

Both toilets are excellent contenders, but the Cadet PRO is slightly quieter than the Drake II. That, combined with a sleeker design that makes it more visually appealing, just barely gives American Standard the edge in this battle.

Flushing Ability

Let’s face it: there’s nothing worse than skid marks on your toilet bowl. Standard toilets aren’t powerful enough to deliver the flushing speed required to rinse tough stains in one flush—but this toilet sure is.

  • Cadet flushing system
  • Large 3″ flush valve
  • WaterSense certified

The Cadet 3’s one-of-a-kind flushing system consists of a chemical- and distort-resistant 3-inch flush valve for accelerated water flow per flush. This unique design makes it nearly 80% faster than regular 2-inch valves! The fully glazed 2-1/8″ trapway prevents clogs and evacuates an impressive 1,000 grams of solid waste with every flush.

Even with its powerful flush, this toilet uses 20% less water than standard toilets and is EPA WaterSense certified.

Design & Style

The Cadet 3 is ADA-compliant, which indicates its optimum level of comfort. With a seat height of 17-1/4″, people of every age and height will benefit from the maximum knee support it provides.

  • Standard classical design
  • Single-flush trip lever
  • Exposed trapway
  • Color options: white, bone, and linen

The toilet bowl surface is composed of a quality vitreous china for a long lifespan. It’s then glazed with silver-ion additives to create its antibacterial EverClean surface that guards against stain growth and mildew.

The toilet is available in three finishes: white, linen, or bone. You’re also given the option for right-side or left-side lever placement, making this toilet extra customizable. Round and elongated bowl shapes are available. The Cadet 3’s slow-close lid and seat cover have a convenient lift-off feature for easy cleaning. The toilet comes with a five-year warranty.

American Standard toilet guide

The History of American Standard Brands

American Standard started as the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company (SSMC) way back in 1875. As one of the first plumbing and fixture manufacturers in the United States, SSMC quickly grew into a highly influential company.

At the forefront of advances in modern plumbing, SSMC played a key role in refining innovations such as widespread indoor plumbing, the one-piece toilet, and combination faucets.

In 1967, the company changed its name to American Standard. It merged with fellow plumbing companies Crane Plumbing and Eljer in 2008, forming the American Standard Brands we know today.

American Standard manufactures not only toilets and toilet seats but everything needed for a complete home bathroom—including showers, tubs, sinks, faucets, soap dispensers, towel bars, and toilet paper holders. They even produce some kitchen appliances!

The company’s general design leans towards clean lines, classic colors, and minimal frills. Under those guidelines, their products fall into one of four distinct design categories: traditional, transitional, modern, and innovative.

Collections range from the classically elegant Delancey—which uses traditional materials and subtle ornamentation to inspire a feeling of old-money class—to the ultra-modern Times Square collection featuring sleek lines and blocky, geometric angles. American Standard truly offers an option for any design aesthetic.

American Standard Toilets: Top Features

Choosing the perfect toilet requires careful consideration. American Standard makes this choice easier by incorporating a number of sought-after features into their models. Here are a few things to consider as you pick your perfect throne.

✓  WaterSense Technology

You may have noticed that many American Standard models feature an EPA WaterSense certification. But what does that mean?

This certification signifies that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized that particular toilet as highly efficient; these toilets tend to use 20% less water than standard models without compromising performance.

Optimal water efficiency can help you save money on water bills while also making a positive environmental impact. That’s great news, considering your toilet is responsible for the majority of your home’s water use!

✓  ADA Compliance

American Standard is dedicated to designing products that meet or exceed the standards recommended by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This includes their Right Height models that are more accessible to people in wheelchairs. For full bathroom accessibility, the company also offers walk-in bathtubs and showers with textured floors for a better grip.

Almost every design collection offers ADA-compliant options. Not only are these features ideal for those with limited mobility or other disabilities—they provide convenience and comfort to a wide range of users.

American Standard’s website also includes a comprehensive article on how to better incorporate ADA-compliant design in your bathroom.

✓  Eco-friendly & Economical

For those concerned about our climate, investing in an eco-friendly toilet is a great way to help protect the environment. Eco-friendly toilets consume less water per flush, helping you reduce your water usage and save thousands of gallons every year.

If your toilet requires multiple flushes to remove waste, it may be time for an upgrade. Replacing your old toilet with a new model can save you as much as 25% of your home’s daily water usage! Thanks to a law passed in 1995, toilets on the market are required to use 1.6 gallons of water per flush or less. American Standard models meet or exceed this requirement, making them an ideal choice.

✓  Toilet Seat Details

Toilet seats usually don’t come with the toilet (though a few American Standard models include them), leaving you with the hassle of purchasing one separately. Before making a purchase, make sure to thoroughly review the toilet’s features to determine if it comes with everything you’re looking for, including a seat. American Standard toilet seats come with various upgrades, such as soft-close features, bidets, and more. Choose the seat that meets your preferences to improve your bathroom experience.

✓  Flush Mechanism

Like most toilets, all American Standard toilets come with a flush valve. Single or dual flush is an important consideration. A dual-flush toilet lets you choose how much water you use per flush; use the smaller flush for liquid waste or the full flush for solid waste. This feature can help you save water and money.

✓  Design Style

From flooring material to paint color, bathroom design is a riveting part of home ownership. Many people forget to consider their choice of toilet, but it can have a big effect on the overall bathroom aesthetic. Thankfully, American Standard toilets come in a variety of sizes, finishes, and heights, all in different price ranges. You can even choose from wall- or floor-mounted for ultimate customization.

✓  Toilet Dimensions

It’s important to consider a toilet’s measurements (like height, width, depth, and rough-in) to ensure it will fit into your bathroom and provide a comfortable experience. American Standard models come in many different measurement options. Be sure to compare the measurements of your preferred model with those of your available space for the perfect fit.

✓  Ease of Installation

Compared to other brands, American Standard toilets are often much simpler and faster to install. For example, drain assembly and adjustment is often one of the trickiest parts of installing a new toilet—but not with American Standard. Traditional toilet drains have around 15 parts to assemble, whereas American Standard drains have only 2. Their drains also feature ultra-tight seals and lift rods that come pre-adjusted to the correct height.
