“For its relatively affordable price, this toilet over-delivers with its self-cleaning features and water-saving 1.28 gallons per flush.”

Flush Ability

The ActiClean uses the ultra-strong VorMax flushing system, which uses 70% of its water to clean the bowl and the remaining 30% to start the siphon and remove waste.

  • Highest possible MaP score of 1,000 grams
  • Dual injection flush valves
  • Glazed trapway

Using 1.28 gallons per flush, the unit saves you about 20 percent on your annual water usage, compared to a traditional 1.6 unit!

Self-Cleaning Features

Looking for a self-cleaning toilet? The American Standard ActiClean toilet has you covered.

The ActiClean has two cycles: quick clean and deep clean. Quick Clean is used for regular upkeep, while the Deep Clean setting can be used for a more thorough wash.  A Quick Clean cycle lasts only one minute while the Deep Clean cycle lasts ten minutes, leaving behind a sparkling bowl with a fresh scent. Just select your cleaning setting by pressing the button on top of the tank. The self-cleaning mechanism operates on 4AA batteries with up to a year of battery life. Four AA batteries are included so you can use the toilet immediately after installation!

While the self-clean functions definitely help to keep the toilet shiny and smelling fresh, don’t throw away your scrub brush just yet! An occasional manual cleaning will still be required; the cleaning cycles provide solution and rinsing, but no actual scrubbing action or additional water jets beyond the standard flush cycle. And keep in mind that the cleaning solution cartridge will occasionally need to be replaced, with prices ranging from $12-$20. This self-cleaning toilet would be a great touch for a bathroom that sees frequent guest or customer use, but the extra function may not be worth it for toilets that don’t get as much use.

Design & Style

Image of an American Standard ActiClean toilet with specifications: 1000 MaP, 1.28 GPF, elongated bowl, two-piece, 30.18" length, 20.6" width, 31.3" height, 17.5" seat height, cleaning cycles: quick or deep cleaning.

The ActiClean’s focus on cleanliness continues into its design details. In addition to its self-cleaning function, the ActiClean’s CleanCurve Rim also eliminates the surface area where grime buildup may occur. This toilet also comes with the exceptional American Standard EverClean glaze which inhibits the growth of stain and odor-causing bacteria. Read more about toilet glazes here.

Other features include:

  • Left hand chrome trip lever
  • Elongated bowl
  • ADA-compliant with a 17-1/4″ seat height
  • Meets WaterSense criteria

This toilet is only available in white, and comes with a high-quality plastic seat with no-slip bumpers, two color-matched bolts, and a quick-release button for quick seat removal. It’s covered by a lifetime warranty on ceramic parts, ten-year warranty on mechanical parts, and one year warranty for electronics and the seat.  The toilet package includes the tank, toilet seat, wax ring, and bowl, but no supply line.

The ActiClean is a Transitional style toilet with a two-piece design. The tank and base have beveled edges and squared corners that give it a more Classical look, while the exposed trapway and buttons on the top of the tank give a more Modern feel. It’s a bit of a contrast, but makes it a piece with more character than other common designs

Our Final Opinion

The American Standard ActiClean is a fantastic piece. For its relatively affordable price, this toilet over-delivers with its self-cleaning features and water-saving 1.28 gallons per flush. While some buyers have received the toilet with a cracked bowl upon delivery, American Standard’s customer service made it easy to resolve the issue with no further headaches. The ActiClean toilet is an excellent and economical choice!
