ADA Compliant Factors

★ Check the Height

Use the measuring tape to measure the toilet from its base to the top of its seat. An ADA-compliant toilet will range between 17″ to 19″. They are much taller than traditional models and make sitting and standing easier.

Even with online purchases, you should measure again when you receive your package to confirm that the toilet height is right and complies with ADA standards.

Read more about tips on measuring your toilet.

★ Undercut Clearances

The Americans with Disabilities Act recommends choosing a toilet with an undercut (one with enough leg space). These toilets are well-spaced beneath their bowls for convenient seating.

The ADA standards for undercuts are a minimum of nine inches between the bowl and its base and a depth of at least 25″. Toilets with this system are called comfort height toilets.

★ Flush Control Height

A flush system that meets ADA standards should have its control no taller than 44-inches from the mounting surface/base. It must also not require more than 5 lbs. of force to activate its flush. The flush system must not require you to twist or strain your wrists.

Toilets with flush valve controls are often designed to meet the ADA-flush system requirements. But, button-activated flush toilets often require more than 5 lbs. of force and are thus, not ADA-compliant.

★ Proper Location

Before installing a toilet, you need to consider how much space you have in your bathroom and what barriers might affect its placement, such as walls, fixtures, or corners.

Considering these factors helps you determine the best position to fit your toilet and ensures your toilet’s flush lever is easily accessible.

If the right side of the toilet is against a wall or a barrier, the flush valve must be on the left side, and vice versa.

“With one of the strongest flushing mechanisms on the market, the Signature Hardware Bradenton 948414 packs a punch with every flush.”

948414-12-L Bradenton

The Signature Hardware Bradenton 948414 is a fantastic choice when you’re on a budget and need a durable find. While the ADA compliant features and optional bidet seating make the toilet a solid pick, what thoroughly impressed us was the Bradenton’s all-mighty flush. The model’s highly efficient suction power saves you time and money with every press of the lever.

Flushing Power

The Signature Hardware Bradenton’s best feature is by far its flushing ability. The toilet uses  horizontal-swirling that takes care of any waste level every time. After each flush, the water swirls around the bowl to reduce waste buildup, making cleaning efficient and easy. The Bradenton also utilizes a 1.28 gallons per flush - saving you money and energy! In fact, the highly efficient toilet uses 20% less water than standard toilets.

Just pressing the lever once we noticed how quiet the toilet’s suction truly was. The toilet has the highest MaP rating at 1,000 grams! Even with its starpower effectiveness, the toilet won’t wake up your family members throughout the night. The lever also requires minimal pressure to be activated and can be pressed sitting or standing.

Comfort

Standing at 17 inches, the Bradenton 948414 is a comfortable choice for any user. The toilet’s height allows you to relax, without straining your knees or body. The elongated toilet seat provides more area to sit on, further adding to your comfort level. The 948414-12-L Bradenton offers the same model with a round seat.

Another great advantage is that this model comes along with a soft-close seat, a terrific feature that prevents the toilet seat from slamming when closed.

The Bradenton 948414 has a one-piece elongated skirted modern design with a concealed trapway that fits with most bathroom aesthetics. This unit doesn’t look clunky in comparison to the similarly priced ADA compliant Carraway two-piece skirted model. The sleek structure looks exceptional and makes installation a breeze. Cleaning only requires mild soap and warm water.

Optional Features

With its affordable price, you might as well opt in for the Bradenton’s bidet seat additions. The bidet seat adds about an inch to the bowl’s height and comes with an adjustable side knob and self-cleaning spray nozzle.

The Bradenton is made of porcelain, vitreous china and comes in white with a chrome hardware finish. A slow-close seat and cover is included as well as lifetime warranty.

“Just as the name suggests, the TOTO Eco Ultramax is a wonderful eco-friendly choice that uses little water but makes sure your bowl is clean with every flush.”

MS854114EL#01 Eco

The last toilet to make our list is the TOTO Eco Ultramax, a solid choice if you’re looking for an efficient toilet with a strong flushing mechanism. The one-piece design is perfect for easy cleaning, without any hidden places for debris to stick. Opt in for the CEFIONTECT glaze to prevent even more grime from sticking to the toilet’s sides.

The TOTO’s regular Eco Ultramax comes with a 15 11/16” seat height but luckily TOTO produced an ADA Height model, with a 17 11/16” seat height.

Flushing

This model features the powerful Ultramax flushing system, using 1.28 gallons per flush, less than its TOTO Drake counterpart. The flushing system contains a 3 inch wide flush valve and extra-large siphon jet, able to clean any waste in an efficient manner. The TOTO Eco Ultramax’s flushing power is eco-friendly, meeting EPA WaterSense and California CEC and CALGreen requirements.

Optional Add Ons

The Eco Ultramax comes in three different models to choose from.

  • MS854114ELG: ADA height toilet elongated bowl with CEFIONTECT and a SoftClose seat.
  • MS854114EL: ADA height toilet with elongated bowl and SoftClose seat
  • MS853113ELR#01: ADA height toilet with round bowl and SoftClose seat

We love the elongated bowl because it’s more accessible and comfortable, providing more room to sit on. The Eco UltraMax comes in cotton, bone, colonial white, and sedona beige.

The Eco UltraMax loses some points in its durability. Many users share their experiences of being delivered a shattered toilet. While this is more the fault of the shipping method rather than the toilet, we find the Eco UltraMax to be a bit more delicate than its TOTO Drake counterpart.

Additional Facts to Mention

ADA-compliant toilet

What is  ADA Compliance?

You have probably heard of the term "ADA compliant,” but did not understand what it meant.

"ADA" stands for Americans with Disabilities Act. The law was essentially signed to ensure people with disabilities are not discriminated against and have equal opportunities. Therefore, an ADA-compliant toilet must meet specific construction and size requirements.

Other Ways to Make your Toilet ADA-Compliant

Grab Bars

While some toilets have pre-installed grab bars, others require buying them separately.

In either scenario, you want to make sure the grab bars are perfectly sized for your bathroom before purchasing.

Dimensions

There are two kinds of grab bars: the side grab bars and the rear grab bars.

Side grab bars should be at least 42 inches long, while rear grab bars should be at least 36 inches long. Both kinds must not be more than 12 inches from your toilet seat for easy accessibility.

These grab bars should extend at least 1.5 inches from your bathroom wall and have a gripping surface of at least 1.25 inches. They must also be able to support at least 250 pounds.

Therefore, you should make sure the considered grab bar ticks all these boxes and matches your bathroom dimensions.

Additional ADA Compliant Bathroom Considerations

You can make your bathroom even more ADA-compliant by ensuring the following features meet the listed specifications:

Toilet Stalls

According to ADA standards, the distance between your toilet and the centerline of your wall must be between 16 to 18-inches.

Mirror Height

People often overlook this bit when setting up their bathroom, even for ADA compliance.

Your mirror should start about 10 -18 inches above the floor to meet ADA standards.

Sink Height

Almost every bathroom is fitted with sinks that are often too high for people with disabilities, especially persons in wheelchairs.

An ADA-compliant sink will rise no further than 34 inches from the floor.
