The Edgemere is a two-piece toilet made from vitreous china, just like most quality toilets on the market today. It features an elongated bowl for maximum comfort, but this model does not come with a seat, you’ll need to purchase one separately.

One of the things that sets the Edgemere apart is its height. Unlike traditional toilet bowls that measure 15 inches high, the Edgemere bowl is 16-1/2 inches from the ground, making it ADA compliant. For most toilet seats this makes the final seat height 17-1/4”. This means that the toilet is more comfortable to use and less likely to cause knee or back pain after extended usage.

American Standard’s PowerWash rim cleaning system is designed to clean the toilet after every flush, keeping it spotless and odor free. The rim is contoured to prevent grime buildup underneath, and two jets are positioned to send a spiral of water around the bowl when flushing. It’s an innovative design that boosts both flushing power and cleanliness.
American Standard’s Everclean glaze also makes the cleaning system more effective by providing a smooth surface that cleans easily and resists buildup and stains.
This toilet is a two-piece model, with a separate tank and bowl as well as an exposed trapway. Both of these features tend to collect dust and grime, requiring a bit more attention to detail when cleaning. It’s not my favorite combination, but both features are very common. You’re probably not going to notice that any extra work is required.

With its larger trapway and flush valve, the Champion PRO 1.6 is one of American Standard’s highest performing toilets, but it also uses more water. At 1.6 gallons per flush, it meets the definition of a low flow toilet, but is not WaterSense Certified.
On the other hand, the Edgemere is more affordable, WaterSense certified, and still achieves the highest possible MaP rating. The Edgemere’s style is also more contemporary and distinctive, giving it an edge over the Champion’s more traditional design if that’s your preferred style.

This model of the American Standard Edgemere toilet is available from several different retailers. Lowes currently offers the best price, while Amazon has a significantly more expensive package that includes a bidet seat. Build.com’s price is slightly higher than Lowes, but offers free shipping, which may make up the difference.

Edgemere Model Variations
Installation Guide
The Edgemere requires a standard 12-inch rough-in for installation. Although the installation of this unit is pretty simple, we’ll break it down into 4 easy steps.
- Step 1 – Remove the Old Toilet – Before removing the old toilet, make sure to close the supply valve. Using a towel, remove the remaining water from the tank and bowl. Then remove the supply line. Remove the toilet, plugging the open pipe to prevent odor from escaping. Finally, remove the closet bolts and you’ll be ready to install your new toilet.
- Step 2 – Install Closet Bolts – Firstly, measure the rough-in of the toilet (this is the distance between the wall and the flange). Then, install the new bolts into the flange channel based on your measurements.
- Step 3 – Install the Wax Seal – Next, invert the new toilet and install the wax ring evenly. You might need to add a bit of sealant. Unplug the waste opening and install the toilet in the proper position. Pay attention to the side marked with “THIS SIDE UP” and ensure everything is facing the right direction to avoid problems in the future.
- Step 4 – Install the New Toilet and Tank – Position the new toilet and press the bowl on the flange. You might also need to tighten the nuts until the unit sits firmly in the right position. Then, install caps on the washers and remove any excess sealant. Now, you only need to install the tank. First, insert rubber grommets into the holes of the tank and insert bolts. Then, install the large gasket at the bottom of the tank and tighten the nuts until the tank is even against the bowl surface. Finally, install the seat according to the manual, and that’s it!
