✓  Rough-In Explained

A toilet rough-in is basically the distance between your bathroom wall and the center of your toilet’s drainpipe.

It’s important to know your toilet’s rough-in size because you want your toilet to fit in its allocated space.

Toilets come in all shapes and sizes; in addition to general dimensions, the rough-in ensures your toilet fits against your bathroom wall.

The most common rough-in you’ll see is 12 inches, though 10 inch rough-ins and 14 inch rough-ins tend to be around as well.

  Measuring a Rough-In

To measure your rough-in, measure from the water outlet, beneath the toilet, to the wall facing the back of the toilet.

Another way to think about this is to measure the toilet from the bare wall to the toilet drainpipe, or toilet flange. Always make sure to double-check the measurement so you don’t purchase the wrong toilet.

Now that you know the basics, it’s time to take a look at the top six best 12” rough-in toilets currently on the market!

American Standard has been one of the best in the business for a while – and the Cadet 3 is no different.

Flush Mechanisms

The toilet uses premier American Standard flushing technology which utilizes a chemical and distort-resistant 3-inch flush valve for accelerated water volume flow per flush. It’s almost 80% faster than regular 2-inch valves.

The fully glazed 2 1/8-inch trapway prevents clogs as well. The toilet has the highest MaP score available of 1,000 grams.

The Cadet 3 is a high-efficiency toilet that uses 1.28 gallons per flush, reducing your annual water usage by 20%, when compared to traditional 1.6 units. A chrome-plated lever is included.

Additionally, the toilet is equipped with the PowerWash rim that scrubs the bowl clean with every flush, with a round front siphon action jetted bowl.

Design & Style

This virtuous china unit has EverClean technology which is a glaze that inhibits the growth of stain and odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew, so you can spend less time cleaning. On that note, take a look at the skirted trapway – no nooks or crannies for annoying dirt to hide in. These factors substantially cut down your cleaning, as all you need to do is give this model a wipe-down every once in a while.

The toilet has a solid height of 16.5” making it easy on the knees and ankles when sitting and standing up.

The Cadet 3 comes with a top mounting, plastic Slow-Close seat and cover with an easy lift-off feature for simple removal and attachment for cleaning, and bowl. Two color-matched bolt-hole covers are included. There is a lifetime warranty on the chinaware, as well as a five-year warranty on all mechanical parts and a one-year warranty on the toilet seat.

This model only comes in white. The 2988.813 is the same unit except with a trip lever on righthand side. If you’re looking for a seat upgrade, consider the compatible 5024B.65G, a traditional round front luxury seat.

Users report having the toilets for years without any diminishing capacity.

The most common problem is the state upon delivery. Due to a turbulent shipping process, some users report that their toilet came fractured or broken in the mail. However, they received a brand new product in the mail quickly thanks to Amazon customer service.

This WinZo’s strength will surprise you.

Flush Power

It’s not common to see such a small toilet with a dual-flush system. The Winzo WZ5079N toilet lets you choose between .8 and 1.6 gpf for your different waste loads. A push button lies on top of the lid.

The toilet bowl was designed with two nozzles flushing holes instead of transitional rim holes to create a powerful whirlpool to clean the entire bowl surface completely. The fully glazed trapway cuts down on clogs and quickly removes waste without a worry.

Design & Style

We love the angular structure of this toilet and think it would look perfect in a modern setting. But even if you’re interested in this toilet because of its compact build, its good looks are certainly a plus.

Like we’ve been saying all along, a skirted trapway looks great and cuts down on cleaning time – two birds, one stone!

The toilet’s dimensions are 23 x 14.55 x 28.75 inches. It has a seat height of 16” which is chair-height and comfortable for most users.

Our Final Take

Similarly to the Horow model, users boast about the WinZo’s small structure and easy adaptability to all bathroom aesthetics. Users find the toilet to be compact, sleek, strong in flush, and easy to clean.

The most common complaint is about the toilet’s .8 gpf flush option. Some reviewers find this option not to be effective for most waste loads – but then again, the 1.6 gpf option is always there for you.

Many reviews post photos of their toilets, showing how well their units look amidst their different bathroom aesthetics. THe most common complaint is similar to the Cadet 3’s, aka state upon delivery.

Another American Standard great, this toilet delivers above-average performance on all fronts.

Flush Power

This High-Efficiency toilet features the industry’s largest trapway, utilizing a 4-inch piston action accelerator flush valve to eliminate 70% more mass than standard toilets in the blink of an eye.

American Standard demonstrated this power in an astonishing video in which they did a flush test with golf balls.

The toilet is equipped with a robust metal trip lever, positioned on the left-hand approach side, as well as a metal shank fill valve.

Additionally, the toilet’s PowerWash rim scrubs the bowl with each flush, cutting down on your cleaning time.

The toilet has the highest MaP score of 1,000 grams and utilizes about one gallon per flush.

A chrome finish trip lever is supplied and positioned on the left-hand approach side. You can also get the lever on the right side with the 4225A 105 model.

Design & Style

This ADA-compliant toilet has a rim height of 16.5” and comes with an elongated bowl. Though we love the tall height, such models aren’t for everyone. If you know small children will frequent your bathroom, a toilet this high may not be the best option for them.

The Champion Pro comes with EZ-Install tools with color-match bowl caps, so you don’t have to call in professional help to finish the job. The toilet also comes with a ten-year warranty.

The 211AA 154 features the same toilet but with a lined tank. The  4225A 164 is a tank complete set up with a tank cover locking device while the 4225A 174 is a tank complete set up with Aquaguard Liner and tank cover locking device.

The toilet is available in white, bone, and linen. A seat and supply line must be purchased separately.

Our Final Take

Most users find the Champion Pro traditionally beautiful and reliable. Many reviews mention the toilet’s sleek, glossy structure, and simple installation process.

Some reviews talk also praise the toilet for its ADA compliance and extra comfortable seating design. The most common complaint is about the low water usage’s effect on rim cleaning.

Because the model uses less water than the traditional unit, you may find yourself cleaning the bowl slightly more than with regular units.

Buyers Guide for 12-Inch Rough-Ins

We listed the major decisions to make when choosing the perfect 12-inch rough in that will fit your needs.

✓  Different Rough-In Types

Different rough-in types align with different space sizes. Smaller, more compact spaces will need a smaller rough-in size, such as 10” rough-ins, while larger spaces will use bigger rough-ins, like 14” rough-ins. However, the most common rough-in on the market is 12”.

✓  Flushing Strength

No one wants waste sticking around. Looking into different brands’ flushing mechanisms and researching MaP scores will help you better understand various flushing strengths. Good suction strength goes a long way and can prevent clogs down the road.

✓  Water Usage

The maximum water usage per flush as per EPA guidelines is 1.6 gpf. Eco-friendly models typically use 1.28 gpf, saving you 20 percent in water usage in comparison. Some dual-flush models will have an even lower option, by using .8 to 1 gpf. Though it may be surprising, 1.28 gpf tend to be as effective as their 1.6 gpf counterparts, so they’re a good eco-friendly and economic alternative.

✓  Exterior Design

Do you want a one-piece or two-piece toilet? Are you looking for a skirted or exposed trapway? What bathroom aesthetic are you going for – traditional or modern? There are tons of questions to ask yourself before you start toilet shopping. While you may be on a budget, there are still many style options you can choose from.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 12-inch rough in standard for a toilet?

Yes, 12” rough-ins are the industry standard for toilets.

Can you replace a 12-inch rough in toilet with a 10-inch rough in toilet?

Yes, you can potentially replace a 12” rough-in toilet with a 10” rough-toilet, though you will probably need a longer supply line. It is not possible to put in a 12” rough-in toilet in a 10” rough-in toilet’s spot.

How do I know if I need a 10 or 12 rough in toilet?

To measure a rough-in, find where your toilet is bolted into the ground and measure from the wall to the center of the toilet’s base bolts.

What is the one-piece toilet better than a two piece toilet?

One-piece toilets are easier to clean, less likely to break in transit, and require no drill holes to support their water tank.

Conclusion

We hope the experts at Toiletable have helped you better understand what a rough-in is as well as why we love these six 12” rough-in toilets. Rough-in size is important so you know for sure in buying a toilet that it will fit in your desired space. Always make sure to double-check measurements and jot down any important details to make your shopping process a bit easier.

You might think that buying a replacement toilet is pretty simple – just find a toilet with the features you like and press the ‘buy’ button. However, there are a few important considerations that will help you make a successful decision. One of the main ones you should pay attention to is the rough-in.

A toilet rough-in is the distance from the finished wall to the center of the toilet’s floor drain or waste outlet. The measurement is best made before the old toilet is removed. The most common measurement for a toilet rough-in is 12 inches, but if you have a 14 inch model to replace, there are still high-quality options to choose from.

When buying a new toilet, your options will be a bit limited, but there are still some great models out there, including the models mentioned in this list.

14-inch Rough-in Explained

While most toilets have a rough-in of 10 or 12 inches, a 14 inch rough-in is less common.

A 10 inch version is much slimmer since it has to allow for a shorter distance.

On the other hand, 14 inch rough-in tends to be much bigger and longer, which can impact the overall style of your new toilet.

In most cases, if you have a compact bathroom, or if your house is older, you will find a 10 inch rough-in on your toilet. Also, there is a good chance that the bowl you choose will be round.

A 12 inch rough-is are the most common because it can fit toilets of almost any type and style.

However, even though it’s the standard size, be sure to do proper measurements before buying a new commode.

Measurements of a Rough-in

If you are buying a new toilet, it’s essential to know what a rough-in is and how to properly measure it.

The rough-in is a distance between the wall and the mounting holes on the flange.

Toilets usually have 10 inch, 12 inch, or 14 inch rough-in, with 12 inch being the most popular in the US.

You can even replace a 14 inch rough-in with a 12 inch version, but you will end up with a 2 inch gap.

However, you can solve the problem by installing an offset toilet flange.

You might need a new wax ring and mounting bolts when replacing your old commode with an updated model.

This two-piece toilet is a Kohler classic, combining elegant design with consistent high-quality performance.

Flushing Performance

The Highline has the fantastically powerful Class Five Flushing Technology that thoroughly cleans its bowl every time and prevents clogging. The flushing system is designed for bulk flushing performance, meaning the toilet’s suction strength takes care of even the largest waste loads.

The Highline toilet only uses 1.28 gallons of water per flush, saving you up to 16,500 gallons of water every year. Even with its premier performance, the Highline’s flushing noise remains at a low-level, perfect for midnight bathroom trips.

Design

The toilet’s smart design is seen in its comfortable height and width. The Highline has the Comfort Height feature, standing at 16.5”. The elongated bowl provides further support and comfort for users of all ages when sitting. The Highline is available in three colors, white, biscuit, or black, and comes with a left-hand polished chrome trip lever.

The toilet uses an easy three-bolt quick-connect installation that doesn’t require professional help. One thing to note is that the toilet does not come with a seat or supply line; however, a bolt cap accessory pack, tank accessory pack, tank cover, and trip lever are included.

We recommend purchasing the compatible K-4636 Cachet Quiet-Close™ Elongated Toilet Seat or K-5588 Purefresh Elongated Toilet Seat for an extra layer of sitting comfort.

Our Final Take

This toilet’s reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Multiple users were pleased with the ease of installation and the speed of the tank filling with this valve. Most discontentment stems from the seat and supply line not being included.

This toilet’s flushing system and design will impress any user.

Flushing Power

Just like the K-3947-0 and K-3948-RA-0, the Kohler K-3948-T-0 Wellworth has the Class Five Flushing Technology that takes care of business quick and easy. Using 1.28 gallons per flush, the toilet’s suction strength is reliably strong, with its single-flush gravity system.

The toilet’s precision-engineered tank, bowl, and fully glazed trapway work together to form a strong siphon that eliminates waste in just a few seconds; the canister flush optimizes the natural force of gravity to suck out all waste loads without leaving any residual stains or streaks.

Design

This two-piece model is made of virtuous china and weighs 95.5 pounds. The unit comes with a left-hand polished chrome trip lever and is compatible with other Wellworth collection items.

The two main notable differences between the K-3948-T-0 Wellworth and its counterparts are this unit’s elongated bowl and tank cover locks. The elongated bowl helps disperse user body weight for a more comfy sitting experience. The tank cover locks add an extra layer of security to avoid any chance of leakage.

The toilet has a three-bolt quick-connect installation. It does not come with a seat or supply line, however, is compatible with Cachet Quiet-Close Elongated Toilet Seat, the Purefresh Elongated Toilet Seat, and the K-4109 C³-230 Elongated bidet toilet seat.

Keep in mind the toilet is similar to the Wellworth K-3947-0 and K-3948-RA-0, in that it stands on the shorter side, at 14.5”. The toilet comes with a right-hand polished chrome trip lever.

The American Standard Cadet Pro is a smart, accessible option that gets the job done – quick and easy.

Flushing Power

The Cadet Pro uses 20% less water than standard toilets, at 1.28 gallons per flush and a MaP score of 1,000. The Power Wash Rim scrubs away any waste that sticks to the toilet bowl with each flush.

The chrome trip lever on the tank of the toilet provides easy flush activation. These features, combined with the glazed trapway, keep the toilet clean at all times by getting rid of the waste entirely without wasting water.

Design

This toilet is great for shorter individuals and those with children due to its height and structure.

Flushing Power

Similar to the Kohler Highline K-3949-0, the K-3947-0 also offers outstanding performance at high efficiency. Kohler K-3947-0 comes with a single-flush option, but it uses only 1.28 gallons per flush, saving you over 16,000 gallons of water each year.

The precision-engineered tank, bowl, and trapway create a strong suction strength that gets rid of any waste load in a few seconds without any leftover streaks. The toilet has the same Class Five Flushing Technology as its other Kohler counterparts.

Design

This two-piece toilet has a round bowl style that is excellent for smaller bathroom layouts. There is also a trip lever on the left that is beautifully coated and polished in chrome, although we believe it is mountable on either side.

No professional help is needed for the installation process. With the Wellworth’s three-bolt quick-connect installation, your new toilet will be working smoothly in no time.

Something to keep in mind is that the toilet’s seat height is on the shorter side, standing at 14.5”, and comes with a round bowl. We do not recommend this toilet for taller individuals and those with mobility issues.

The toilet is available in white, biscuit, or black. A seat and supply line is not included but a bolt cap accessory pack, tank accessory pack, tank cover, and trip lever are included.

The Wellworth is compatible with the Purefresh Quiet-Close Round Front Toilet Seat and Purefresh Round-Front Toilet Seat as well as the Puretide Quiet-Close Round-Front manual bidet seat.

Our Final Take

Buyers were delighted about the quality of this unit. They like the power behind this compact option, with one review stating: “It’s more specific to our needs in a small bathroom closet with the lower profile and a 14” rough-in setback.” The height isn’t for everyone, as taller individuals and those with mobility issues are unable to comfortably use the toilet.

Flushing Power

The unit has a siphonic jet flush, which perfectly cleans any waste in a single go, and a large water surface that keeps the bowl cleaner and reduces lingering smells. Just like other Kohler units, the toilet has Class Five Flushing Technology that takes care of potential clogs through its impressive suction strength. Buyers Guide for 14-Inch Rough-Ins

Here are seven factors to consider when buying a new 14-inch rough-in toilet.

Water Consumption

High-efficiency toilets are more eco-friendly and save you money on your water bills by reducing water consumption. Considering the fact that toilet use is responsible for 30% of residential water usage, you can see where this is important to your monthly budget. Many states also require the installation of high-efficiency toilets, because with widespread use they reduce the need for water restrictions during drought conditions.

Take a look at the difference between 1.28 vs. 1.6 GPF toilets.

Bowl Shape

Toilet bowl shapes can be either round or elongated, and both of these have their advantages. Elongated bowls are more comfortable, but they take more space. In some situations, even a few inches can be too much. That’s why round bowls are excellent for smaller bathrooms.

✓ Toilet Price

Buying a new toilet is a long-term investment, and price is always a primary factor to consider. It would be helpful to prioritize the features that are important to you, and then you can make a smart decision. If you want a toilet with LED nightlights, remote controller, seat height adjustment – go for it! It will obviously cost more, but will be worth the extra money.

One-Piece vs. Two-Piece

One-piece units look stylish and luxurious, making them ideal for modern bathrooms. They are also easy to maintain since there are fewer nooks and crannies susceptible to dirt. Since they come as a single piece, they almost never cause leaking.

On the other hand, if a one-piece toilet breaks, you need to replace the whole unit. They are also heavier and more difficult to carry to the installation location.

Two-piece units are usually cheaper, but connecting the tank and the bowl increases installation time. They are also larger, more susceptible to dirt, and not ideal for smaller bathrooms.

You may be interested in our reviews of one-piece toilets.

Glazing Finish

Since we use toilets every day, glazing is important to consider. If the unit has a smooth surface, the waste will much easier go down and won’t stick. It means that you will have to do less maintenance, but also, the toilet will be more hygienic without all the possible bacteria and mold.

If you are looking for a unit with a high-quality glaze, search for labels such as EverClean (American Standard), Cefiontect (TOTO), and Sanagloss (TOTO). These have been tested many times over the years.

✓ Accessibility

Accessibility is another essential thing to consider, especially if you live in a family with young children, elderly, or physically challenged people. ADA-compliant toilets have slightly taller bowls, which release tension on joints and muscles while you are sitting. They also have elongated bowls, for superior comfort.

Read more about our ADA-compliant toilet reviews.

✓ Trapway

Not all units have the same trapways, but what is the difference? With a large trapway, the toilet can push more waste, but that’s not always necessary. Units with larger trapways can be more expensive, but a standard trapway is normally more than sufficient for a residential toilet.

Measuring Tips

There are four accurate measurements before you can install your 14-inch rough-in toilet.

1. Toilet Flange and Back Wall Distance

While taking measurements from behind the wall, be sure to center the toilet flange at a distance of 12 inches from the wall. This usually applies to most toilets with this size of a rough-in, but check the specifications and measure accordingly.

2. Center of Unit and Sidewall Distance

This measurement shouldn’t be less than 15 inches because it’s the distance between your new toilet and the sidewall, or any other fixture, on both sides. For example, if the tub is next to your commode, it should be at least 15 inches away or more.

3. Front of the Toilet and Other Fixtures Distance

This measurement might vary between countries since it mainly relies on local plumbing codes for standard distance. If plumbing requirements in your area are under IPC, you will need, at a minimum, 21 inches of clearance.

However, if you live in a city that is under UPC, you will need at least 24 inches instead. Remember, this is the amount of space between the front-most side of your toilet and any wall,  door, or other similar obstruction.

4. Water Supply Line Placement

Find the center of the closet flange and measure six inches to the left. Then, go seven inches up above the floor, and that is your ideal position for the water supply line. If the water line comes too high or too low, you might need to do additional repairs, which might turn out very ugly. You can even go six inches above the floor, but not lower than that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a Toilet Tank Directly Touch the Wall?

It depends on the rough-in of the unit. If it’s smaller, you will have some space – if it’s not, then it may touch the wall.

Can I Change the Rough-in Measurement of My Unit?

Usually, when you replace a toilet, it should have the same rough-in measurement as the previous unit. However, if the rough-in is larger, you will need to modify the plumbing configuration. The only other option would be to move the wall.

What Is the Minimum Clearance in Front of the Toilet?

As a rule of thumb, it should be at least 21 inches. There shouldn’t be any wall or fixture within that distance. Also, the distance shouldn’t be less than 24 inches when it comes to the Uniform Plumbing Code.
These are, however, the minimal measurements; the distance can be much greater than that, as long as it’s comfortable to use the toilet.

What is the difference between a 12 and 14 rough in toilet?

Fourteen inch rough-ins tend to have more room behind the toilet.

What is the most common toilet rough in?

Twelve inch rough-ins are the industry standard for toilets.

What does 14 rough in toilet mean?

A 14” rough-in means that the space between the wall behind the toilet and the toilet’s base bolts is 14 inches.

Is a round or elongated toilet better for a small bathroom?

Round and elongated toilets tend to take up the same space in small bathrooms. However, elongated toilets tend to be more comfortable as they disperse user body weight.

Final Thoughts

Although 14-inch rough-in toilets are less common, you will be satisfied with any unit from the list. These are all manufactured by popular companies and made from top-quality materials, so decide what features are important to you and get started with the installation!

What’s a toilet rough-in and why does it matter? The experts at Toiletable are here to answer any and all of your toilet-related questions.

A toilet rough-in is the distance between the wall behind the toilet and the center of the drainpipe. While a standard rough-in is 12 inches, smaller bathrooms are often set up with a 10-inch rough-in to maximize space.

A smaller rough-in positions your toilet closer to the wall, allowing extra legroom in the front.

Rough-In Explained

image showing toilet and the rough in location on base of white toilet, facts listed below in circles The size of the rough-in for a toilet is quite important. Your plumber can only install toilets based on the existing rough-in for the main drain pipe.

And, once your rough-in is set, it’s very really difficult to change.

Therefore, plan accordingly when designing and new bathroom space to ensure you build everything as you’d like.

Toilets most frequently come with a 14”, 12”, or 10” rough-in.

The rough-in must be measured properly and precisely! If it is not, you may lack free space to install the toilet correctly.

Be sure to know your bathroom’s rough-in and pick a toilet that matches to avoid any installation issues.

10-Inch Rough-in Considerations

If you are thinking about whether you should get a 10-inch rough-in or not, there are a few details to consider:

Gaining Space

image showing the 10 To start, going with a 10-inch rough-in allows you to gain only a few inches of free space.

If these extra few inches will increase the usability of your bathroom, like allowing you to open a cabinet or shower door fully, then the 10-inch rough-in can make a big difference.

If the extra inches won’t significantly change how you use the bathroom however, it may not be worth the investment.

Existing Rough-In

showing the rough in measurements of a 10 inch toilet, white toilet, with dotted measuring line Another consideration is whether your bathroom already includes a 10-inch rough-in.

Converting your existing rough-in to a 10-inch option is a complex process that can be very expensive.

However, if your bathroom already has a 10-inch rough-in, you can make the most of it to maximize your bathroom space.

Toilet Models Available

Compared to the more common 12-inch rough-in options, there are fewer buying choices for 10-inch rough-in toilets, so make sure you’ll be able to find a toilet that fits your needs if you’re going with a 10-inch rough-in.

However, just because your bathroom space is limited, doesn’t mean you have to compromise on efficiency or looks.

TOTO is widely known for its high-quality 10-inch rough-in toilets. This two-piece sleek option is various built-in features, along with a smooth look that helps streamline the cleaning process.

Flushing Power

The TOTO G-Max flushing system uses an extra-large siphon jet for maximum suction power and a wide 3” flush valve to pack a punch in every flush. The toilet’s fully glazed trapway also reduces the chance of clogging.

The CST744SF uses the industry standard. 1.6 gallons per flush and has the highest MaP score possible of 1,000 grams. The toilet comes with a chrome trip lever that is easy to use.

Design

We love the look of the TOTO Drake because it’s undemanding and simple. Sometimes you want the rest of your bathroom aesthetic to do the talking for you. The CST744SF would fit in any bathroom theme while getting the job done.

The most comfortable aspect of the CST744SF is the toilet’s height. Standing at 17.25 inches, the toilet feels like a standard chair. Higher toilets are easier to sit down and stand up from. The elongated bowl further elevates the user experience by dispersing body weight.

The best part? The CST744SF is ADA-compliant when installed with the trip lever on the approach side.

The toilet comes with a bowl, tank, and cover. The tank and cover can either come with a standard left or right-hand trip lever or come as a bolt-down lid with a right-hand trip lever. A seat is not included. However, this TOTO model is compatible with most TOTO seats, such as the SoftClose model.

This Drake model only comes in cotton. If you are interested in more of the TOTO Drake models, check out our Drake Round Up here. Buyers Guide for the Perfect 10-inch Rough-in Toilet

After you’ve decided whether a 10-inch rough-in toilet is right for you, there are other features to consider to select the specific best option.

Type of Toilet

There are two main types of toilets: one-piece and two-piece designs, which depend on whether the bowl and tank are fused together.

Typically, one-piece toilets are smaller than their two-piece counterparts, and they’re generally easier to maintain as they don’t have hidden places between parts.

On the other hand, two-piece models come with the bowl separate from the tank. Their biggest advantage is that they are much cheaper than their counterparts, and can be easier to install. However, you may experience shipping problems with two-piece models.

Water Consumption

Not a lot of people realize that their toilets can have a huge impact on their water bills every year. Now, different kinds of toilets offer different flushing capacities. According to the EPA, your toilet should not use more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush.

Most water-saving toilets stick to this standard. Still, certain more effective models have a rating of 1.28 gallons per flush, which can come with added benefits like EPA WaterSense certification. Read more about toilet water conservation here.

Confort Height Selection

Most manufacturers often use terms such as comfort height, right height, and universal height. These different options can sometimes be very confusing to some people.

Basically, these different terms refer to how far the toilet is from the ground.

For example, the standard height for most toilets is around 16 inches. It’s important to also note that adding a toilet seat can add additional inches to your toilet.

Exact Rough-in Measurements

As mentioned above, if your rough-in doesn’t match the rough-in in your bathroom, you’ll have major complications when installing a toilet.

If you’re even one inch off between both, you may not be able to install the toilet at all. Be sure to select a toilet that matches your bathroom’s rough-in, whether that be a 10-inch rough-in or another size. How to measure a rough in toilet.

Type of Flushing System

Flush technology is another factor to consider when buying a toilet, as it determines the overall efficiency and flushing power. In general, more powerful systems will keep your bowl cleaner and are less likely to clog even with one flush.

Looking for a more powerful flushing system will help you save water and better maintain a clean toilet bowl surface.

Water Restrictions Standards

Don’t forget to check for any water restriction standards in your state before purchasing a toilet as well. For example, some states such as Texas and California don’t allow toilets that use more than 1.28 gallons per flush.

Most other states are fine with 1.6 gallons per flush, however, you should always confirm before making your final toilet choice.

Bowl Type

Another essential detail to consider is the type of bowl – you’ll typically be able to select either a round or elongated bowl. Round-shaped bowls are better for those who want to save space. Elongated bowls, on the other hand, take up more space, but provide more room for your legs, making them more comfortable.

Regardless of which option best fits your needs, you’ll also want to see if the toilet comes with an anti-microbial finish or other additional helpful features.

Warranty and Certifications

One last factor to keep in mind is the type of warranty. Warranty is the best way for a company to ensure the quality of their toilets. The standard warranty for many toilets is about 1 – 3 years.

However, if you’re very worried about potential issues with the toilet, you can look for an extended warranty option, with warranties lasting up to 5 years or even longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 10-Inch Rough-in Toilet the Best Solution to Save Extra Space?

Long story short, while it can be an effective option, a 10-inch rough-in might not always be the best.
Specifically, you should consider getting this kind of toilet only if saving a few inches will get you the space you need, particularly if your bathroom is already set up with a 10-inch rough-in. There are other options available as well that can save even more space, such as a corner or a wall-hung toilet.

What Are the Main Differences Between 10-Inch and 12-Inch Rough-ins?

There aren’t many significant differences between the 12-inch and 10-inch rough-ins. In general, 10-inch rough-ins are more likely to be found in older houses. On the other hand, the 12-inch models are typical for modern bathrooms. Overall, 12-inch rough-ins are more common, so you may have more trouble finding a 10-inch toilet option if you do have a 10-inch rough-in.

Can I Replace Toilets With Bigger Rough-in Sizes with a 10-Inch Rough-in Toilet?

Unfortunately, if you have a toilet with a bigger rough-in size you can’t install a 10-inch rough-in. You are going to have to measure the size of your rough-in and find a toilet that size because otherwise, the parts won’t connect.

Are there any 10-inch rough in toilets?

Yes, the best 10-inch rough-in toilets on the market are: the TOTO CST744SF Drake, Kohler Highline, TOTO Eco Drake, Kohler K-3889 Highline, American Standard Cadet 3, American Standard Baby Devoro, and American Standard Edgemere.

Can you replace a 10-inch rough in toilet with a 12-inch rough in toilet?

It is not possible to put in a 12” rough-in toilet in a 10” rough-in toilet’s spot.

How do I know if I need a 10 or 12 rough in toilet?

To measure a rough-in, find where your toilet is bolted into the ground and measure from the wall to the center of the toilet’s base bolts.

What is the best toilet flush strength?

The Kohler Highline has the strongest flush. The toilet uses Kohler’s classic Class Five Flush with only 1.28 gallons per flush. Waste is removed without hassle, as the toilet’s MaP score is 1,000 grams.

Bottom Line

With all the various features this model has to offer, these toilets make great choices for everybody. They are designed sturdy and durable, meaning you don’t have to sacrifice high-quality design for compact space.

Toiletable is here to assist you in every aspect of toilet buying.
