When you’re in the market for an environmentally friendly toilet, a dual flushing toilet is a great option. The American Standard H2Option has a dual flush design that consists of both partial and full flushes. A full flush consumes 1.28 gallons, and a partial flush consumes only 0.92 gallons. This innovative design saves even more water than the standard low-flow toilet without sacrificing efficiency.

“Even at its full flush volume of 1.28 gallons per flush, this toilet is EPA WaterSense certified, making users eligible for consumer rebates on their water bills. When also using the partial flush volume of 0.92 gallons, water savings are even more impressive.”

Design & Style

This modern toilet is made from vitreous china like many other conventional toilets. It features a round-front bowl that is ideal for smaller bathrooms and restrooms. Other notable design features include:

Graphic of American Standard H2Option toilet, highlighting features: PowerWash, Slow Close, EverClean, and dual flush.

  • Chrome-plated push button actuator
  • Two piece design
  • Exposed trapway
  • No seat included

American Standard’s EverClean antimicrobial surface prevents bacterial growth, stains, and odors. Thanks to this glaze, your toilet will keep itself cleaner on its own. However, be careful which cleaner you use to avoid damaging the EverClean surface.

The H2Option is available in white, bone, and linen. It comes with a limited lifetime warranty on ceramics and a limited five-year warranty on mechanical parts.

The sleek chrome push buttons on the tank give this toilet a modern, minimalist look, even with the traditional round-front bowl and exposed trapway. I appreciate the balance between distinctive and traditional design, it makes this toilet a great fit for most decorating styles.

Flushing System

The American Standard H2Option has a dual-flush system that allows the user to select how much power is needed for each flush. This system supports both partial and full flush options, providing greater water savings than a toilet that uses the same volume with every flush. The H2Option is an Ultra High Efficiency Toilet (UHET) that uses jet bowl siphon technology and American Standard’s PowerWash rim, resulting in a powerful and efficient flush. The jet bowl flush system uses pressurized air to apply additional force to each flush with minimal water use.

In addition this toilet has the MaP Premium rating, which indicates both high performance and high efficiency.

  • WaterSense Certified
  • MaP Premium listed
  • Glazed trapway

I was really impressed by the ultra-low water usage for this toilet, most dual-flush toilets only qualify for WaterSense using the partial flush or an average flush rating. But even at its full flush volume of 1.28 gallons per flush, this toilet is EPA WaterSense certified, making users eligible for consumer rebates on their water bills. When also using the partial flush volume of 0.92 gallons, water savings are even more impressive. Usually I’d expect the ultra-low flow to result in problems with flushing power, but the reviews for this toilet confirm that it gets the job done!

Installation

The H2Option requires a standard 12-inch rough-in for installation. Although the installation of this unit is pretty simple, we’ll break it down into 4 easy steps.

Step 1 – Remove the Old Toilet

Before removing the old toilet, make sure to close the supply valve. Using a towel, remove the remaining water from the tank and bowl. Then remove the supply line. Remove the toilet, plugging the open pipe to prevent odor from escaping. Finally, remove the closet bolts and you’ll be ready to install your new toilet.Advertisement for an American Standard H2Option toilet. Descriptions highlight features such as dual flush and EverClean surface.

Step 2 – Install Closet Bolts

Firstly, measure the rough-in of the toilet (this is the distance between the wall and the flange). Then, install the new bolts into the flange channel based on your measurements.

Step 3 – Install the Wax Seal

Next, invert the new toilet and install the wax ring evenly. You might need to add a bit of sealant. Unplug the waste opening and install the toilet in the proper position. Pay attention to the side marked with “THIS SIDE UP” and ensure everything is facing the right direction to avoid problems in the future.

Step 4 – Install the New Toilet and Tank

Position the new toilet and press the bowl on the flange. You might also need to tighten the nuts until the unit sits firmly in the right position. Then, install caps on the washers and remove any excess sealant. Now, you only need to install the tank.

First, insert rubber grommets into the holes of the tank and insert bolts. Then, install the large gasket at the bottom of the tank and tighten the nuts until the tank is even against the bowl surface. Finally, install the seat according to the manual, and that’s it!

Comparison – H2Option vs. Edgemere

Let’s compare the H2Option with another of American Standard’s dual flush toilets, the Edgemere.

H2Option (2889218.020) Edgemere Dual Flush (204AA200.020)
Two piece Two piece
Dual flush: 1.28 or 0.92 gallons per flush Dual flush: 1.6 or 1.1 gallons per flush
Round standard height bowl Elongated Right Height bowl
Ultra High Efficiency Toilet (UHET) High Efficiency Toilet (HET)
Does not include seat Does not include seat
3” flush valve 3” flush valve
Price range: low Price range: low
MaP Premium Listed 1,000 MaP Rated

Although these two dual flush toilets have many similarities, the H2Option is even more water efficient then the Edgemere, earning the Ultra High Efficiency Toilet designation. The H2Option’s round bowl makes it a better fit for small bathrooms, although that may sacrifice comfort compared to the Edgemere’s elongated bowl. At standard height instead of Right Height, the H2Option is the shorter model, which would make it more comfortable for children or shorter adults, but may be more difficult to use for the elderly or those with mobility issues.

Buying Options

This model of the American Standard H2Option toilet is available from several different retailers, including Amazon, Home Depot, Build.com, and Wayfair. Most of the listings do not include either the toilet seat or wax ring, although Amazon includes both as a full package, reflected in a significantly higher price. Home Depot and Build.com match each other for the lowest price and longest return period of 90 days.

Depending on your needs, Home Depot likely offers the best price and shipping options: from free delivery to your local store up to interior delivery and unpacking for a fee.

Overall Rating

Overall, the American Standard H2Option is a modern ultra high-efficiency toilet with a dual-flushing system that helps conserve water. Additionally, its PowerWash rim and EverClean surface ensure powerful flushes and easy cleaning. This toilet is an excellent water-conscious choice, especially for a small bathroom.
