Who doesn’t enjoy a thoroughly relaxing bath that gives you the feeling of a deep cleanse? A sitz bath is very similar to a regular bath, but it is known to provide relief from certain conditions, such as pain and itching in and around the genital area. Furthermore, a sitz bath uses warm and enables you to clean the perineum (the space between the rectum and the vulva/scrotum), which provides instant relief. Arranging a sitz bath requires a particular kit that ensures your safety and comfort so that you can benefit from a peaceful sitz bath.
You don’t need a doctor’s prescription for a sitz bath, and you can enjoy it whenever you feel the need to. Some people prefer to benefit from sitz bath tub regularly to keep themselves clean all the time. Additionally, a sitz bath tub has multiple advantages, including increased blood flow, faster healing, and relief from itching and pain in the genital area.
Why do you need a sitz bath?
There are several reasons why one might need a sitz bath, and it can help greatly to get rid of and heal from some medical conditions. A sitz bath can help you if you:
- have recently had surgery on the vulva or vagina
- are going through any discomfort due to hemorrhoids
- have irregular and discomforting bowel movements
- recently gave birth
- have recently gotten your hemorrhoids removed surgically
A sitz bath can benefit both children and adults equally; however, parents should always supervise their children during a sitz bath. Furthermore, doctors also recommend medication and additives that you can put in your sitz bath for added comfort and pain relief.
How to use a sitz bath?
Arranging a sitz bath would require a plastic kit that goes over your toilet, and its round shape can easily fit on a toilet. The kit includes a shallow basin that has a plastic bag with a long tubing on end. You can securely fill the bag with warm water through the tube. Additionally, the size of the basin is slightly bigger than the toilet bowl, which allows for its easy and secure mounting on the toilet.
While using a kit for a sitz bath, you can add warm water before sitting down, or you can also add water using the tube if you have already down. Now, the water will be deep enough to soak your perineum thoroughly. Sit in that position for 15 to 20 minutes and soak your perineum.
Most kits feature vents that prevent the water from overflowing if you choose to add warm water to the bag continuously so that it doesn’t get cold. After sitting like that for 15 to 20 minutes, get up and pat yourself dry with a dry cotton towel and make sure that you are gentle.
Make sure that you clean the sitz bath kit so that it is all set for when you’ll need it for the next use.
Using a bathtub for a sitz bath
Another way of taking a sitz bath is in the bathtub, which doesn’t require a particular kit. Firstly, you will have to clean the bathtub thoroughly using two tablespoons of bleach mixed in a ½ gallon of water. Use this solution to scrub the bathtub and then rinse it thoroughly.
Now, fill the bathtub with warm water, and it should be up to three to four inches. Make sure that the water is not too hot to cause any discomfort or burns on your skin. Furthermore, if the water is too hot, you can mix some cold water into it and get the desired warm temperature. You can now add any medication that your doctor has prescribed you.
The next step is to get into the bathtub and soak your perineum for 15 to 20 minutes. You can bend your knees or put your legs on the edge of the bathtub to keep them out of water. Additionally, after spending 15 to minutes like that, get out of the bathtub and dry yourself gently with a clean and dry cotton towel or cloth. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing your perineum because it will cancel out the effects of the sitz bath.
