Most toilets nowadays are quite powerful and feature a wide, fully-glazed trapway. These features allow modern toilets to provide powerful flushes and a clog-free experience. Still, sometimes solid poop can clog up your toilet. Although that situation is quite embarrassing, the solution doesn’t have to be. In today’s guide, we are going to show you some of the easiest DIY tricks and methods to dissolve poop clogging your toilet.

Below we’ll describe the top 4 approaches to clearing your toilet, from helpful tools like the plunger to DIY non-toxic chemical solutions:
1. Using A Plunger
Having a plunger at your home is a huge advantage as it is one of the easiest non-messy ways to unclog a toilet. There are two different types of plungers. First, a flat plunger that’s ideal for unclogging shower drains. The second type is a flange plunger and a much better choice when it comes to unclogging toilets.
To follow this method, follow these key steps:
- Put on some rubber gloves to keep your hands clean
- Next, put the plunger into the toilet, cover the drain hole, and push the plunger up and down up and down. If you push or pull too hard it could result in dirty water splashing all over the floor, so be careful
- Repeat this process a couple of times to build pressure and then pull the plunger sharply to break the vacuum
- This action should trigger the toilet to flush, removing the waste and unclogging your toilet
2. Vinegar And Baking Soda
Most of the time a plunger can do a decent job unclogging the toilet, but when this method doesn’t work, the combination of baking soda and vinegar is a great non-toxic household agent. This combination is often used for cleaning surfaces, fighting greasy or clogged drains, and deodorizing. The method itself is pretty simple:
- Start by pouring a 250 ml glass of baking soda into the toilet
- Wait for a few minutes as the solution sits
- Then pour a glass of vinegar into the bowl
- Wait again for the mixture to create a fizzy chemical reaction which will break down the clog
- Finally, flush the toilet in confirm that your solution has worked and the waste has been removed
3. Using A Toilet Auger
A toilet auger is another very popular tool used for unclogging toilets. However, we highly recommend you try using a plunger first as a toilet auger is mostly used for severe clogs where a plunger doesn’t work. This tool is also known as a closet auger and it consists of a few parts, including a medium-sized cable that is designed to snake through the drain and break down any type of clog. The cable is isolated in a hollow tube which is covered by soft rubber so the auger won’t damage or scratch the toilet bowl.
Hot Water And Detergent
The combination of detergent and hot water is also known to be quite successful at unclogging toilets. Just like the baking soda and vinegar method, this one is also very simple, using items you likely already have around the house.
- First, boil 1.5 gallons of water. While the water is boiling, put some detergent into the toilet bowl. If you can’t find any detergent, find any type of bar soap, slice it into tiny pieces and add those into the bowl
- Once the water is ready, start pouring it carefully into the bowl
- Let the detergent and hot water sit for about 20 minutes
- Finally, flush the toilet to check if the method was successful.
A Few Words In The End
There are many simple methods to unclog a toilet. We recommend trying each of the above as needed – you can also try multiple options on the same clog. For example, sometimes the mixtures like hot water and detergent won’t work. Therefore, after trying the mixtures, you can use a plunger or, in severe cases, an auger, as another option to unclog your toilet. If you have a very severe clog and none of the methods above work, we recommend you call a plumber. However, for the typical occasional clogged toilets, we hope these methods will help you resolve your issue and be on your way in no time!
